Frequently Asked Questions
Answers to common questions about QEEG Brain Mapping and Neurofeedback Training.
We want you to feel fully informed and comfortable as you begin your brain training journey. Below are answers to the questions we hear most frequently from clients and families.
No. Neurofeedback does not involve medications. It is a completely drug-free, non-invasive training method that focuses solely on your brainwaves. Many clients, under their doctor's guidance, are able to reduce or eliminate medications once their brain timing stabilizes.
Not at all! A QEEG brain map is a surface scan of your scalp that reads the electrical impulses generated by your brain. We place a soft sensor cap with conductive gel on your head. There are no shocks, no pain, and no side effects. You simply sit comfortably while the system records for about 20 minutes with your eyes open and closed.
Neurofeedback technology has existed since the 1960s. However, it is only in the last decade, with advanced computer processing and digitization, that QEEG brain mapping and real-time training could move from laboratory research to a practical, office-based clinical setting.
The brain generates four primary waves: Delta (deep sleep), Theta (drowsy, pre-sleep), Alpha (relaxed, eyes-closed reflection), and Beta (active alert). Imbalances in these patterns can correlate with mental health or neurological symptoms. For instance, TBI or concussion often leads to excess slow-wave Delta or Theta when you should be awake and alert. Retraining these patterns helps restore natural balance.
Each active training session lasts approximately 30 minutes.
During a session, you sit in a comfortable chair while passive sensors monitor your brainwaves. You will watch a movie or listen to music. When the system detects target brainwave frequencies, the screen plays brightly and clearly. If your patterns drift, the screen dims. Over time, your brain learns to maintain healthy activity naturally.
Every brain is unique. Timing varies based on symptoms, lifestyle, diet, and history. Some clients feel a difference in a few sessions, while more chronic issues can require 20 to 30 sessions. The changes created by neurofeedback are designed to be long-lasting as the brain learns new permanent regulation habits.
Follow-up studies show that improvements from neurofeedback can be sustained for years or even decades. Once the brain learns a new, self-regulated pattern, it tends to keep practicing it, much like riding a bicycle.
Yes. You can safely start training while taking medications. As your brain function regulates and becomes more efficient, your physician may suggest reducing or adjusting your medication dosage.
Neurofeedback has no known serious side effects when administered by trained practitioners. Because it is a form of learning (biofeedback), any minor adjustments needed in the protocol can be identified and corrected immediately by our clinic during your sessions.
Research shows that individuals with ADHD frequently produce excess slow Theta waves and low Beta waves in frontal lobes. Neurofeedback helps teach the brain to shift into active Beta states, significantly reducing attention issues and hyperactivity.
Neurofeedback has been around for decades. To date there are thousands of studies, with more being published every day. The International Society of Neurofeedback and Research has a comprehensive bibliography on all the research related to neurofeedback for a variety of conditions.
Our Brainwave Optimization Process
Neurofeedback is a safe, non-invasive training system that teaches the brain to regulate its own electrical timing. By checking brainwaves in real-time, we help the brain discover healthier, more efficient patterns.
